OPPO releases R9s Red Edition in time for Valentine’s Day

170201-oppo-r9s-valentine-red-malaysia

After introducing the OPPO R9s, the selfie-centric smartphone brand is now releasing a red colour variant in time for Valentine’s Day. This also coincides with the current Chinese New Year festivities where red symbolises good fortune and happiness.

The OPPO R9s in red will be available in Malaysia in time for Valentine’s Day. Apart from the colour, the new variant carries the same hardware on the inside. Over at the front, it gets a 5.5″ Full HD display protected by Gorilla Glass 5 and underneath it runs on a Snapdragon 625 processor with 4GB of RAM. On-board it gets an ample 64GB of storage which is expandable via microSD up to 128GB extra.
The main highlight is its rear camera where it gets a 16MP Sony IMX 398 sensor that’s assisted by a fast f/1.7 lens and dual PDAF technology for a quicker snap. It also gets a 16MP selfie shooter upfront with a host of beautification features. The R9s also gets a decently sized 3,010mAh battery that supports OPPO’s VOOC Flash Charging technology. The R9s comes in a metal unibody design and there’s a home button in front that doubles up as a quick fingerprint sensor.
There’s no word on the pricing for the R9s Valentine red edition and the standard Gold and Rose Gold versions are currently going for RM1,798.

The S8’s ‘infinity’ display leaves no room for a Samsung logo

170125-samsung-galaxy-s8-infinity-display
It would seem that 2017 will be the year of the bezel-less smartphone. As the biggest mobile event of the year, MWC 2017, draws closer, leaks from the likes of LG reveal that the company’s upcoming G6 flagship smartphone will severely cut down on screen bezels. Now, a new report from The Guardian hints at the fact that Samsung will debut their own version of a bezel-less display.
The Guardian are calling it an ‘infinity’ display and apparently it’s bezels are so thin, Samsung couldn’t even put their logo in front.
According to the news site’s insider sources, the Galaxy S8 will come in two screen sizes that range somewhere in the five and six inch region and have been codenamed Dream and Dream 2. However, despite that, the new devices will have smaller proportions than the existing Galaxy S7 and S7 edge thanks to the minimal bezels. Both models will also be curved on the left and right sides of the display, so there will be no non-curved Galaxy S8. Since the top and bottom bezels are so slim, there will likely be no capacitive back button either.

Alleged front glass plate of the Galaxy S8
Besides that, the smartphone is also said to sport an Iris scanner on the front of the phone, like the Galaxy Note7, to unlock the device and authorise payments. Since it looks like there will no longer be a physical home button on the front of the S8, The Guardian’s sources say that Samsung has moved the fingerprint scanner to the bottom of the handset. I’d imagine that this will make it rather difficult to make Samsung Pay transactions, though. Still, there are rumours floating around that the company will embed it under the display in front instead.
Powering the handset will Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 835 processor that’s developed on Samsung’s new 10nm process. For Malaysia, we’re likely to get the variant with Samsung’s own chip inside, however.
Other pieces of juicy information The Guardian managed to get out of their sources was that the Samsung Galaxy S8 will come with some form of AI assistant. This assistant can also perform tasks like object recognition using the smartphone’s camera similar to Google Goggles. There is, however, no confirmed name for the AI system. There is also no information on whether it will ship with the Google Assistant in some markets.
Speaking of the camera, the report indicates that the S8 will not be utilising a dual-camera setup. Instead, Samsung will stick to a similar single-camera setup that utilises the company’s dual-pixel technology. However, it will have incremental improvements to image quality, low-light performance and speed. Considering how good the S7 edge’s camera is, I can’t say I’m too disappointed. More speed on one of the fastest smartphone cameras on the market? Yes, please.
Then we’ve got the slightly more far-fetched bits of information. According to the report, the S8 will also have a new range of accessories. The most interesting of which is an accessory called DeX (for desktop extension) that will work like Microsoft’s Continuum and let you hook up a monitor + keyboard + other peripherals and use your smartphone as an Android PC.
We’ve all seen rumours like this before, with the Google Pixel, that never turned into fruition so I’d suggest that you take this with a big grain of salt.
Samsung’s upcoming successor to the Galaxy S7 will not make its debut during the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona this year. Instead, the handset has been rumoured to be launched on the 29th of March. This delay comes following the Note7 fiasco.
What do you guys think of this latest set of rumours? Let me know in the comments below! Also, keep in mind that these are not officially confirmed specifications so take it with the appropriate amount of scepticism.

This is how the LG G6 fits a 5.7″ display in a smaller smartphone body

170124-lg-g6-leaked-bezels-1
LG is expected to show off something big on the eve of MWC 2017 at Barcelona. Likely to be its next flagship, the LG G6, this device would be a significant jump from its previous flagship especially the current modular G5.
As teased earlier, the new flagship smartphone would offer a bigger screen in a smaller body. It may sound cliche, LG could be doing something nearly as radical as Xiaomi’s Mi MiX.

170124-lg-g6-leaked-bezels
What you’re seeing is the purported LG G6 which comes with thinner bezels. While it isn’t as bezel-less as the crazy Mi MIX, it has enough space to house an earpiece while the selfie camera and proximity sensors are at the right place. We have no idea how the bottom looks like but the screen should be pretty close to edge.
It will come with a 5.7 inch QHD+ LCD display which pushes 2880×1440 resolution. With an odd 18:9 display aspect ratio, the LG G6 is going to be a skinny and tall, allowing a phablet screen size with a narrower width for better single handed use. That’s like how Apple’s iPhone grew taller from a 3.5″ iPhone 4S to a 4.0″ iPhone 5. We are not sure how this would affect the software interface but this isn’t the first time LG has played with weird screen aspect ratios. Remember the LG Vu?
The LG G6 is expected to get a dual-camera system at the rear along with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The modular design would be scrapped in favour for better dust and water resistance. In case you’re wondering, it still comes with a headphone jack.
Does LG have what it takes to beat the next Samsung Galaxy? We’ll find out next month.

While OPPO is focusing on having a better rear camera, the vivo V5 Plus gets 2 cameras in front that consists of a 20MP primary camera and a secondary 8MP unit. Over at the rear, it gets a 16MP main camera. The vivo V5 Plus also gets a decent 3,160mAh battery that supports fast charging. Overall, the vivo V5 Plus is a significant upgrade over its earlier vivo V5. Priced at a lower RM1,299, the V5 also comes with a 5.5″ display but it pushes a lower HD 720p resolution. Under the hood, it runs on a MediaTek MT6750 processor with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. For taking selfies, it gets a single 20MP IMX376 f/2.0 camera while the rear gets a standard 13MP shooter with PDAF. Keeping the lights on is a 3,000mAh battery.

There are 3 specs being offered – 2GB RAM + 32GB storage, 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. Like the Redmi Note 3, it supports dual-SIMs and microSD card via its hybrid slot. On the front, the Redmi Note 4 has a 5.5″ Full HD IPS display that pushes a respectable density of 401ppi.
